Choosing a small learning cohort

Questions to ask about instruction, support, schedule and evidence of progress.

Start with the learner’s goal

A class can offer discussion, guided practice and shared projects. A learner who needs intensive intervention may need a different group size or individual support. Match the service to the need before comparing prices.

Understand what “small” means

ARKTIK’s planned in-person class model has up to 10 learners per cohort and no more than three cohorts per instructor per day. This is a class format. It should not be described as equivalent to one-to-one intervention.

The Institute of Education Sciences notes that tutoring groups of two to four can be effective, while larger groups require more instructional skill and provide less personalization. Its discussion also emphasizes session frequency, educator preparation and consistency. These findings do not establish outcomes for an ARKTIK class.

Ask for the complete schedule

  • How long is each session, and how often does my child attend?
  • What grade range, readiness and learning goals does the group serve?
  • Who teaches, who supervises arrival and departure, and what happens during an absence?
  • What accommodations or additional support can be provided within the agreed scope?
  • What work happens between sessions, and what is the parent’s role?

Look for useful evidence

ARKTIK’s suggested record is simple: the starting task, the work completed, the feedback given and the next task. Ask to see how a learner demonstrates a skill independently. A completed worksheet or a seat in class alone does not establish mastery.

Confirm before enrolling

Eligible materials and in-person services are priced separately. TEFA may cover the exact approved materials through the authorized program process. In-person instruction and support included in higher MAP products are self-pay and are not covered by TEFA. Your written quote identifies each component and its payment route.

Request the specific location, accessibility arrangements, instructor, dates, price, materials, cancellation terms and support responsibilities in writing. Availability and the learner’s start date require confirmation. A cohort class is not automatically a complete school program, accredited course or transferable credit.
